A gathering around an outdoor fire is a popular pastime. The American Society of Landscape Architects named fire pits as the most popular outdoor design element in its annual survey, which was conducted in 2018. However, there are a number of things that people do not like about fires, including the difficulty in lighting a fire, the smell of smoke, and the mess.
Throughout the last several years, portable fire pits have been more popular. Approximately 85 percent of the market is factory direct, yet there is minimal brand awareness and several disadvantages to the items that are currently available.
It identified an opportunity for its TIKI Brand to disrupt the industry and grow into a new market by providing high-quality, unique products to its customers. Our collaboration helped us better grasp the prospects and build a fire pit experience that is superior from the point of purchase all the way through storage.
First, we held a workshop to learn more about the target consumer's perception of a TIKI-branded portable fire pit, as well as what a direct-to-consumer experience may involve. We put up a campsite in our Madison office and created a timetable for the event, from the moment of purchase through the time of setup for camping and tailgating. We came up with possible techniques and design ideas to consider.
The thoughts developed during the original brainstorming session were refined by our designers and strategists, and a strategy for entering this market area was developed. We presented drawings and foam-core models to a focus group in order to determine whether or not the idea was desirable.
Using an attractive reverse-cone shape that is contemporary and welcoming, our designers encircled the engine and worked out the dimensions and production requirements in order to fulfill the cost and shipping limits of factory-direct retailing. TIKI created their own prototype and then came back to us for more design and research assistance on the packaging, wood pellet packs, and physical accessories that they had created. In conjunction with mocked-up packaging, fast start instructions, and a prototype, our design researchers conducted consumer testing to discover customers' expectations and pain spots throughout the out-of-box experience. These observations aided in the improvement of the design of the fire pit and its accompanying accessories.
The finished device is simple to install and makes use of handy wood pellet packs, while also allowing for the use of a traditional wood fire when desired. Because of its form and materials, it has a contemporary design that was influenced by outdoor furniture trends and is cooler to the touch as a result. Decks and lawns may be safely utilized, and it can be put on lawns without causing damage to the grass underneath, which is especially handy for urban homeowners and tenants.
